When a major bank issued their design brief for new office accommodation in Spencer Dock, Dublin, minimising the carbon footprint was very much to the fore. The accommodation was to be high specification, state-of-the-art and able to provide a fresh and pleasant working environment for the staff. Now that the revisions to Part L have taken effect there is an understanding of the direction in which the industry is moving and this, coupled with discussions regarding the future revisions of the regulations, is causing designers to turn more and more to the lowest energy solutions possible for the comfort control of buildings. The opportunity therefore existed for a fan coil approach with energy use approaching the chilled beam and with similar or better whole life costs.
